BRCA Fit - Bec and Susie running the half marathon

I'm fundraising for Inherited Cancers Australia

Feb 2023 saw my life change forever when I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast cancer, a highly aggressive type of Breast Cancer, with limited treatment options that affects approx 15% of Breast Cancer diagnosis.  What followed was 12 months of gruelling chemo, multiple surgeries and a discovery that I was carrying a genetic mutation that was the cause of my cancer.

I have no family history of cancer, so finding out that my cancer was a result of a genetic mutation was a huge shock.  Finding accurate and relevant information became critical in making decisions.   This is when I was introduced to the team at Inherited Cancers for support and information.  As I moved through my treatment and into recovery I've continued to work closely with them to raise awareness of the work (you can find my story on the website).  As a small charity they rely heavily on donations.  The work they do is invaluable in raising awareness, providing tangible support to those facing life changing decisions and advocating and lobbying governments to provide more funding to support inherited cancers.

I've moved through my cancer treatment and am very much finding my new normal with a "No Evidence of Disease" status.  A huge part of my recovery has been rebuilding my strength and fitness.  To help with the motivation to 'rebuild' Susie and I have both signed up to run the Sydney Half Marathon in May.  Training is underway, but I can see the huge impact the last 2 years has had on my body, with my overall fitness and strength being seriously diminished.  This run is not about any times, its just about finishing and proving that my body really can do anything.

Appreciate any donations, large or small!

My Updates

We did it!

Monday 5th May
On what was a stunning Sydney Sunday, Susie and I headed to the start line in the biggest Sydney Half we’ve ever been part of (25000 people took part).  TBH I wasn’t feeling overly confident and even picking up the race bids the day before I had shed a tear, this wasn’t just going to be about physically achieving something, I knew mentally this was going to be tough.
We set off at a slow pace and I was struggling to find a rhythm, my first few km splits were all over the place.  Around 4km I found a rhythm and felt ok, but by 9k it was physically a struggle.  I knew I needed a different strategy, so started to run 1k walk 100m.   This would keep my average pace where it needed to be to get a sub 3hr time.  It was working until around 17k and this is when I knew I had to dig deep mentally and physically.   I told myself that I’d sat in a chemo chair for longer that this run was, I knew it would all be over within an hr and I just had to put one foot in front the other.  As we reached the 20km marker I knew I’d cross that finish line, I upped the pace as much as my legs would allow, the tears started to flow as we entered the last 100m  and we crossed the finish line in 2:59!
Thanks for all the support, this one was special, and this was a big FU from me to Cancer ❤️
