Course Outline:

This half-day workshop designed to elevate the confidence and capability of primary care nurses in recognising, supporting, and advocating for patients with inherited cancer risk. 

The workshop will be facilitated by Robyn Smith, Programs and Advocacy Manager Inherited Cancers Australia. A Senior Genetic Counsellor will be presenting the didactic section of this workshop. The second part of the workshop is a facilitated Q&A expert panel discussion including two consumers living with inherited cancer risk (Lynch syndrome and BRCA) and two cancer specialists. This panel will provide attendees with an opportunity to ask questions and learn in a Q&A setting. 

Target audience: 

Primary care nurses and all nurses who support patients with cancer and inherited cancer risk 

Learning outcomes:

1. Describe key features of inherited cancer risk and identify patient and family history indicators that warrant referral for genetic assessment.
2. Describe the implications of genetic testing for patients in a primary health care setting.
3. Explain pre-test and post-test referral pathways, including referral criteria and required information to support timely care coordination.
4. Outline the psychosocial and practical implications of inherited cancer risk for patients and their families and recognise how these impact long-term care needs.
